A few weeks ago I was meeting my dear artistic friend Rhonda in San Francisco for breakfast, while my hubby had his band rehearsal nearby. We walked into a Borders bookstore (I loooooove books) where I headed straight to my favorite section--Arts and Crafts. There I found a jewelry book that had these "chandelier" earrings that immediately caught my eye. I thought, these would be perfect for Holly, my son's girlfriend and I could finally take my wire jig out of its packaging (it has been waiting in my closet for many months...) and actually try it--two for one!
So this past weekend Holly and Peter came to visit and I started my earrings the night before. O.K., I admit it: I work best under pressure. The first try was a bit clumsy, bending the wire evenly around these little pegs; so that went into the recycle pile. By the third try, I had it down and it was starting to be fun. I made the two earring bases with copper wire; copper is very popular now and one of my favorite metals. All the different possibilities were racing through my head: different colored wire, silver wire, all the colors of beads and crystals to attach to the form, etc., etc., etc., I got a bit overwhelmed and decided to let Holly pick out her beads from the hundreds of different kinds and colors of beads I had available. .
During the visit (and our feasting, baseball watching, Scrabble playing, "Master Chef" watching, and "hanging out"), I asked Holly to come to the studio to see the earrings and select her beads. The moment she set eyes on the earring bases, she exclaimed with a big smile: "Oh yeah! I like these!" She picked out beads that I had never considered; the beads were perfect! I worked to attach them and presented her with the finished pair. She loved them. Like, really loved them. You know it when someone says something to you just to be polite--not here... When I asked her if she would model some of my other jewelry in the future, she said she'd love to.
I am so thrilled to have made something for Holly that I know she really loves and gotten a beautiful model to boot.
Now if I could only make something for my son that he would like.......
